![]() Before we jump into our text for today, I want to say a word to parents of prodigal children. George Barna reports one of every five parents of young children believe they are doing a good job training their children morally and spiritually. There is no fail-safe formula for parenting success.Parents must aim to raise children to be life-long disciples. ![]() Psalm 127:3 : “Sons are a heritage from the LORD, children a reward from him.” It’s a privilege and a responsibility to raise difference-makers for Christ. Children are intended to be a blessing from God, not a burden to bear.Someone put it like this: “Blending a family isn’t about making everything the same, it’s about mixing two things to make something new.” As we learned two weeks ago, Scripture celebrates singleness. If you are single, you are not second-class.If you are a single parent, you are a family.I’ve had to remember this now that our girls are grown and gone. If you’re married and don’t have kids, or they are no longer in the home, you are still a family. ![]() Whenever I preach on the topic of parenting, I like to start with some suppositions. ![]() ![]() As we continue in our series called “Family Matters,” I want to propose that parenting is not only hard work, it is heart work because parents must pass along the faith they possess. Is it possible what happens at home is more important than what happens at church? This year, a child will actually attend church less than 40 weekends because of COVID. ![]()

![]() In a quest to find the truth she must travel into the terrifying Underbelly of the city to meet a twisted architect who has dark designs on her family - before it's too late. Soon Triss discovers that what happened to her is more strange and terrible than she could ever have imagined, and that she is quite literally not herself. She looks through her diary to try to remember, but the pages have been ripped out. She is insatiably hungry her sister seems scared of her and her parents whisper behind closed doors. ![]() When Triss wakes up after an accident, she knows that something is very wrong. ![]() It's a fantastically entertaining story that is also peppered subtly with wisdom and thought-provoking messages that apply to readers of every age. The sisters and creatures were delightful, the adults (with one notable exception) horrid, but mostly redeemable. 'Who do you think you are? This is my family.' CUCKOO SONG by Frances Hardinge is hilarious and bizarre and absolutely darling. 'What are you doing here?' It was uttered in tones of outrage and surprise, and in a voice as cold and musical as the clinking of cups. Then the tiny mouth moved, opened to speak. Slowly they swivelled, until their gaze was resting on Triss' face. ![]() The first things to shift were the doll's eyes, the beautiful grey-green glass eyes. This exciting collection of Roman mysteries is the 5th volume, chronologically wise, of the amazing "Roma sub Rosa" series, featuring the determined seeker of the truth, Gordianus the Finder, while also appearing as a kind of clever detective is his concubine, Bethesda, and not to forget his mute but quick-witted adopted son called, Eco. ![]() ![]() ![]() But when we worry about everything all the time instead of embracing a worldview based on facts, we can lose our ability to focus on the things that threaten us most. ![]() ![]() It turns out that the world, for all its imperfections, is in a much better state than we might think. That doesn’t mean there aren’t real concerns. Our problem is that we don’t know what we don’t know, and even our guesses are informed by unconscious and predictable biases. It reveals the ten instincts that distort our perspective―from our tendency to divide the world into two camps (usually some version of us and them) to the way we consume media (where fear rules) to how we perceive progress (believing that most things are getting worse). So wrong that a chimpanzee choosing answers at random will consistently outguess teachers, journalists, Nobel laureates, and investment bankers.įactfulness offers a radical new explanation of why this happens. ![]() When asked simple questions about global trends― what percentage of the world’s population live in poverty why the world’s population is increasing how many girls finish school―we systematically get the answers wrong. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() here, I will just type it out word for word:Īnd then in a moment, simple and pure, they were together in a way they hadn't been before. I'm not familiar with sex crime laws in 2007, but the scene between Tibby and Brian fits today's definition of rape. Puh-lease.īut what I have really mixed feelings on was a scene with Tibby. I also came down with a case of eye-roll strain from the giant deus ex machina Kostos twist. Not all 30 year olds with families are looking to cheat, I wish that books would stop portraying marriage this way! Teens getting involved with an older, married person is such an overused trope and it's especially frustrating with it isn't used for anything. I was so irritated with Bridget's choices that seemed to stem from nothing more than boredom. BUT, I thought this book contained soooo many overdone tropes. I maybe connected with each character the most this time around. I feel as though the writing has grown a lot since the first book. I did really enjoy the depth to the characters in this one. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 2020) ALA MW, OLA, TLA, SLJ Middle Grade Magic contesting and more in Annick teacher-librarian newsletter Trade journal editor meetings with author Library advertising Educator's guide Librarian and teacher outreach, including promotion at Day of Dialog (Oct. Previous research addressing this important question has yielded dozens of experiments in which participants were asked to choose the best of several options (e.g., cars or apartments) either after conscious deliberation, or after a momentary diversion of thought induced by performing an unrelated task.
